Haydn the focus of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts

February & March 2009, Thursdays 1pm,
London Symphony Orchestra St Luke’s

BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime concerts take place at 1pm on Thursdays at LSO St Luke’s and feature the finest chamber music performances by established and emerging artists on BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists Scheme. During spring 2009 BBC Radio 3 has programmed a chamber series to explore the music of Haydn. All concerts will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 throughout March and April 2009.

Haydn Series

Many regard the Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn as the ‘Father of the String Quartet’. He was composing at a time when many new classical styles and forms were emerging, such as the symphony, sonata, the concerto and the string quartet and accordingly he is now considered as a cornerstone of music from the classical period.

The Vienna Piano Trio was founded in 1998 and two of the three founding members are in the ensemble today. The Trio performs throughout Europe, the Far East, Australia and the Americas, in particularly as part of chamber music festivals. The Michelangelo Quartet was formed by four distinguished musicians in 2002; violinists Mihaela Martin & Stephen Picard, viola player Nobuko Imai and cellist Frans Helmerson. They have since toured all over Europe and Japan and have signed a recording contract with Pan Classics to record all the Beethoven String Quartets. German musician Andreas Staier has been on the international scene for over 20 years and is widely regarded as one of the most prominent harpsichord and fortepiano performers in the world.
