New Album Represents Unique Collaboration between City’s Major League Baseball Team & Orchestra
The launch of the Boston Pops Orchestra’s new recording, The Red Sox Album—produced in conjunction with the Boston Red Sox and Major League Baseball—will take place on Monday, April 6, the opening day of the Red Sox 2009 season. In celebration of the release of this new album, Keith Lockhart and members of the Boston Pops will be featured in performance during the Red Sox opening day festivities.
“The Boston Red Sox and the Boston Pops are uniquely and inextricably linked to Boston, a city that takes its greatest traditions to heart like no other. All of us at the Pops are thrilled to dedicate this album to one of the sports world’s greatest institutions, and to bring Sox fans some of their all-time favorite baseball music, performed by America’s favorite orchestra.” - Conductor Keith Lockhart
The Red Sox Album, featuring the Boston Pops Orchestra along with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, includes new arrangements of Fenway’s traditional fan anthem “Sweet Caroline” and the baseball classic “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Members of Red Sox Nation will also be treated to a new arrangement of the Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shippin’ Up to Boston,” the theme song for Jonathan Papelbon’s Irish victory dance. Two of Sousa’s classic marches, the Boston Pops’ signature “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and the “National Game,” highlighted by the crack of David Ortiz’s bat, are also featured. Completing the album is the musical version of baseball’s famous heart-wrencher, “Casey at the Bat,” with special guest narrator Broadway star Gregg Edelman. A special tribute essay by award-winning print and TV commentator Mike Barnicle is featured in the CD booklet.
“This CD marks the next exciting chapter in what continues to be a tremendous partnership between two of Boston’s most storied institutions. The Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony have provided the soundtrack for some of the most memorable moments at Fenway Park. With the release of ‘The Red Sox Album’, they are giving fans a new way to enjoy music that is inextricably linked with our team and our players. This one-of-a-kind album was produced by one of America’s favorite orchestras, led by one of America’s most talented conductors, for one of America’s most beloved teams.” - Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino
