Michael Cavanaugh and his band join the Pops for an evening of music by Billy Joel

MAY 8 & 9, Michael Cavanaugh and the Boston Pops

Broadway sensation Michael Cavanaugh will bring his high-energy vocals and piano playing to such show-stoppers as “Uptown Girl,” “You May Be Right,” and “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.”

The first half of the evening features an adventurous mix of pop/rock favorites drawing from the music of Paul Simon, the Beatles and others, as well as the Boston premiere of “Celebration Fanfare” by the noted conductor/composer/arranger Steven Reineke. The program showcases several of Reineke’s arrangements, including “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind,” and “On Broadway,” from Smokey Joe’s Café.

Michael Cavanaugh, who grew up idolizing Joel, formed his first band at the age of ten and was performing in Las Vegas when the “Piano Man” himself saw his act, joined him onstage, and handpicked him to star in his smash hit musical Movin’ Out, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp. Cavanaugh was nominated for a Tony Award for his vivid performance as Joel’s onstage alter ego.
