Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra to Dispel Misconceptions about the Baroque Concerto

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra’s November program is designed to dispel your misconceptions about the Baroque concerto, which is often compared to a musical conversation – thought civil, restrained. However, the music in this concert overflows with unchecked passions and boundless energy. The musicians will quarrel, brawl, reconcile and fight some more in an evening of sophisticated contretemps. Opening with Georg Muffat’s graceful ode to friendship, the program rollicks with Georg Philipp Telemann’s grand and youthful joust (Concerto for Two Violins & Bassoon) and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer’s posturing swordplay (Die Fechtschule), ending with Johann Sebastian Bach’s harrowing Violin Concerto No. 2. PBO is excited to welcome back to the podium Libby Wallfisch, one of the foremost period-violin soloists and a good friend of many in the Orchestra. This fiery virtuoso and exciting program may just stir you into a debate or two before the evening is up.

The Role of Music in Opera

There are numerous books on the topic, and every composer, librettist, director, singer and audience member has their opinion as to what role the music should play in an opera. In a play without music, the words ought to support the meaning behind a character's actions. However, in the case of action movies, often times the action is what tells the story and there aren't words, just images to forward the plot. We might hear music to accompany action, build tension, but the action tells the story. Musicals tend to speak until the emotion of the moment just "has" to break out in song - unless it's something like "Mama Mia" where the dialog is the rails we travel on between songs; the songs themselves, written before the concept of the musical, are the focus of the production, while the story is secondary.
