200Chopin Offers Full-Track Streaming, Interactive Features and Trip for Two to See Alice Sara Ott in Concert

Deutsche Grammophon and Decca continue the Chopin Celebration with an unprecedented offering of music. DG & Decca have literally thrown the vault doors open and made thousands of tracks available for the general public to stream, rate, create playlists with and so much more.

This all-new site seeks to expose the user to the variety of interpretations of Chopin’s compositions that DG & Decca artists have recorded over the years. Whether used as a point of entry for the uninitiated or as a means of study and comparison by the aficionado, this site allows everyone to explore Chopin’s music and actively engage in the listening experience.

Most importantly, every track is free and available for streaming. The “price of admission” is a simple user registration. (Without registration the user can only listen to excerpts) There is not now, nor will there be, a cost to the user. DG & Decca want to engage the public and share the riches deep within the catalog. One will find recordings (both available and out-of-print) by Argerich, Ashkenazy, Barenboim, Blechacz, Freire, Grimaud, Gulda, Michelangeli, Pires, Pollini, Uchida, Zimerman and many others. Of interest are also recordings from Stefan Askenase, Gyorgy Cziffra, Adam Harasiewicz, Julian Karolyi and others.

There are numerous books on the topic, and every composer, librettist, director, singer and audience member has their opinion as to what role the music should play in an opera. In a play without music, the words ought to support the meaning behind a character's actions. However, in the case of action movies, often times the action is what tells the story and there aren't words, just images to forward the plot. We might hear music to accompany action, build tension, but the action tells the story. Musicals tend to speak until the emotion of the moment just "has" to break out in song - unless it's something like "Mama Mia" where the dialog is the rails we travel on between songs; the songs themselves, written before the concept of the musical, are the focus of the production, while the story is secondary.
