Keith Lockhart Leads Orchestra and Special Guests Idina Menzel, Doc Severinsen and Michael Chertock in Program Celebrating the Pops' Sensational History

On Tuesday, May 4, at 8 p.m., Keith Lockhart will lead the opening night concert of the Boston Pops 125th Anniversary Season, featuring Broadway sensation Idina Menzel (“Wicked,” “Rent,” “Glee!”), trumpet icon Doc Severinsen (“The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson”), and piano virtuoso Michael Chertock. Boston Pops opening day activities begin at 12:15 p.m. with a press conference with Keith Lockhart and the evening’s guest artists, followed by the opening night dress rehearsal at 1 p.m. The evening festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. when Boston Pops founder Henry Lee Higginson and popular Boston historic figure Isabella Stewart Gardner arrive by horse-drawn carriage to a red-carpeted Symphony Hall entrance. Later in the evening, Keith Lockhart and Peter Fiedler (son of Arthur Fielder) arrive at Symphony Hall on an antique fire truck, paying tribute to legendary fire buff Arthur Fiedler’s 50-year tenure as Boston Pops Conductor.

Celebrity chef Duff Goldman (Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes”), will also make a surprise appearance to unveil a cake baked in honor of the Boston Pops 125th Birthday, and conduct “The Stars and Stripes Forever” to end the concert. The concert program will celebrate the legacies of Arthur Fiedler, John Williams, and Keith Lockhart, and include film music by John Williams and the world premiere of The Beatles: Rock Band Sing-Along, a set of orchestrated Beatles songs set to images from the popular game.
