Massive Mid-Century Masterpieces Link Two Modern Composers: John Cage & Olivier Messiaen Shared Their Piano Cycles in Paris

Dedicated Proponents, Pianists Adam Tendler & Christopher Taylor Will Reveal the Intricacies of These Linked Works in a Pair of Linked Concerts at Jacaranda Music’s February 22nd Mid-Century Modern Program Jacaranda's 10th anniversary season continues on Saturday, February 22, 2014 with a dinner break — a break that separates the performances of two 20-movement mid-twentieth-century masterworks by John Cage and Olivier Messiaen. Each cycle is played by an American pianist with whom the music has become synonymous: Adam Tendler and Christopher Taylor, respectively. The consecutive concerts (Tendler at 5:00 p.m. and Taylor at 7:30 p.m.) will take place at First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica, 1220 Second Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401. Jacaranda’s first decade gave extensive attention to the centenaries of Messiaen (1908-92) and Cage (1912-89). Bernard Haitink Conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in Works by Purcell, Mozart, Schubert and Bruckner

Bernard Haitink conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in two concerts with Portugese pianist Maria João Pires on 10 and 14 June. On 10 June the programme includes Schubert’s Ninth and final symphony, widely considered to be Schubert’s finest piece for orchestra. On 14 June Haitink conducts the LSO in Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony, one of the composer’s most popular works. Both concerts open with music by Purcell; the Chacony in G minor edited for string orchestra by Benjamin Britten (10 June) and the Funeral March for Queen Mary (14 June). Maria João Pires is the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 20 in D minor (10 June) and No 23 in A major (14 June). The LSO with Bernard Haitink and Maria João Pires perform the same programmes at the Salle Pleyel in Paris on 17 and 18 June, part of the LSO’s annual residency at the Salle Pleyel. Bernard Haitink Conducts the London Symphony Orchestra with Pianist Murray Perahia in London & Paris

Bernard Haitink will conduct the London Symphony Orchestra in three concerts at London’s Barbican on 14, 16 and 23 June. Pianist Murray Perahia joins the Orchestra as soloist in Schumann’s Piano Concerto on 14 & 16 June; Bruckner’s Symphony No.4 is also performed. On 23 June, Haitink conducts the LSO in Ravel’s Mother Goose and Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The London Symphony Orchestra will tour Bruckner’s Symphony No.4 and Schumann’s Piano Concerto with Haitink and Perahia to Paris’ Salle Pleyel, on 18 June. The London Symphony Orchestra is the International Resident Orchestra of La Salle Pleyel. Haitink last conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No 9 in July 2009 at the BBC Proms to outstanding critical and popular acclaim.
