The Dallas Opera to give world premiere of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s Moby-Dick

In its history, The Dallas Opera has produced two world premieres and five American premieres. The opening season in the Winspear Opera House will comprise 30 performances of five operas, including the world premiere of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s Moby-Dick, starring powerhouse tenor Ben Heppner.

Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s Moby-Dick, based on Herman Melville’s novel, will receive its world premiere on April 30 in a co-production with the San Francisco Opera, San Diego Opera, Calgary Opera, and South Australian State Opera. In his Dallas Opera debut, Ben Heppner is to star as Captain Ahab, with Stephen Costello as Ishmael, Morgan Smith as Starbuck, and Jonathan Lemalu as Queequeg. The production will be staged by Leonard Foglia and conducted by Patrick Summers.

The Dallas Opera’s additional productions this season are Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. A 500-guest benefit celebration of the new Winspear home will be given onstage on November 7, preceded by a concert performance by soprano Deborah Voigt.

A champion of new music, soprano Talise Trevigne will create the role of "Pip" in the world premiere of Jake Heggie's Moby-Dick with Dallas Opera in her company début (April-May 2010). She will be the ONLY female singer in the cast! She reprises the role with San Diego Opera in February 2012.

When an artist sets paint to canvas, there are brush strokes used for different effects. Sometimes those strokes are subtle, imperceptible; they produce works of art like the Mona Lisa . Other times the very obvious nature of the stroke is the art, as in works by Van Gogh. With some composers of music, the notes on the page are their craft. How those notes translate into an aural experience is what defines some composers as great artists. Brian Ferneyhough has a masterful command of the techniques of putting notes on the page. These techniques are sometimes so subtle, even though written in black and white, they escape detection.
