Jazz Guitar Virtuoso John Pizzarelli & Cello Diva Maya Beiser
perform with the Boston Pops, May 12 & 13

In week two of the Boston Pops season, Keith Lockhart leads the Pops in concerts May 12 and 13 featuring the genre-defying contemporary cello diva Maya Beiser performing the world premiere of a suite from the movie The Village by renowned film composer James Newton Howard and Exodus, Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra, based on music from the film Exodus, as well as a solo for electric cello, “Kashmir,” by Led Zeppelin’s guitarist Jimmy Page. The program also includes by the multi-faceted jazz guitar virtuoso and singer John Pizzarelli, whose distinctive talent brings stylish flair to a set list entitled “With a Song in My Heart – The Music of Richard Rodgers.”

Maya Beiser is described by the The New Yorker as a "cello goddess" and by the San Francisco Chronicle as "the queen of post-minimalist cello," Maya Beiser has captivated audiences worldwide with her virtuosity, eclectic repertoire, and relentless quest to redefine her instrument's boundaries.

Over the past decade, she has created new repertoire for the cello, commissioning and performing many works written for her by today's leading composers. She has collaborated with composers Tan Dun, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Osvaldo Golijov, Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen and Mark O'Connor among many others. Maya is a featured performer on the world's most prestigious stages, having appeared recently at the Sydney Opera House, New York City's Lincoln Center, the World Expo in Nagoya, Japan, and in Barcelona, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai, and San Francisco.

John Pizzarelli has had a multi-faceted career as a jazz guitarist, vocalist and bandleader. Internationally known for classic standards, late-night ballads, and the cool jazz flavor he brings to his performances and recordings, he has recently established himself as the consummate entertainer and radio program host with the launch of "Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli" a nationally syndicated radio program co-hosted with his wife, Broadway star Jessica Molaskey.
