Keith Lockhart and the The Boston Pops Open 2009 Season
with Legendary Broadway Star Barbara Cook

Spring in Boston officially arrives when Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops kick off the 2009 Symphony Hall season on Wednesday, May 6, at 8 p.m., with a gala “Opening Night at Pops” program featuring legendary Broadway and cabaret star Barbara Cook (pictured). Adding to the festivities, all Opening Night guests are invited to attend a 7 p.m. pre-concert reception, to enjoy light refreshments in the festive Boston Pops atmosphere of Symphony Hall. The opening night program marks the orchestra’s 124th season, and Keith Lockhart’s 15th year as conductor of the Boston Pops.

Filling out the first week of the 2009 Boston Pops season, on May 8 and 9, Tony nominee Michael Cavanaugh from the Broadway hit Movin’ Out will perform an evening of Billy Joel favorites on May 8 and 9.

MAY 6 & 7, BARBARA COOK
Barbara Cook and her trio--music director/pianist Lee Musiker, bassist Peter Donovan and drummer James Saporito—join Keith Lockhart and the Pops for some of the most beloved tunes from the American songbook, including “It Might As Well Be Spring,” Broadway favorites, such as “This Nearly Was Mine” and “Wonderful Guy,” and jazzy classics like “Hallelujah, I Love Him So.” This Pops concert will also feature the 2009 Sphinx Competition Senior Division winner, 19-year old Tony Rymer, performing the last movement of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major. Opening Night also commemorates the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth with a performance of Aaron Copland’s stirring “Lincoln Portrait,” and featuring a new film by Susan Dangel and Dick Bartlett. Continuing the season theme, “America’s Favorite Pastime,” the Pops will also perform selections from their newly released CD, The Red Sox Album. As part of the season-long celebration of the new recording, WCVB Channel 5’s award-winning newsmagazine “Chronicle” has produced a rollicking video tribute featuring the Pops’ new arrangement of the Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” to be seen for the first time at opening night. The May 6 opening night program repeats on May 7.
