At the end of week two and audition recordings have started coming in. There are some fine musicians on Twitter! The audition process for TwtrSymphony sounds pretty simple on paper (or over a Tweet), but musicians are finding it's a lot easier to tweet than to attempt. I wrote a 30-45 second audition piece for each instrument of the orchestra --you can see some examples here . With each piece I included a click track sub-dividing the beats into two. So, a 4/4 measure would have 8 clicks, with the first beat getting an accented click. Since the time signatures change frequently, even though the timing does not, the musicians have to maintain a sense of the music while keeping a rigid sense of time. Add to this, computers and metronomes are not really accurate. Several musicians have commented their metronomes didn't match with the metronome marking on the music in relation to the click track. The Music of Chip Michael is different than a lot of other composers with an infusion of odd rhythms, even breaking standard rhythms in non-standard ways. The pieces below are some of the audition pieces that have gone out to the musicians of TwtrSymphony. The mp3's are not the actual click tracks as they don't include the "click" and therefore don't have the two measures of rest before the music begins. The instrument playing is a midi realization of the music, and corresponds to the pdf's in the tabs below. Look through the music and you'll find what I'm asking them to play captures the essence of each instrument, is different from what the other instruments have to play and is very different from what standard orchestras ask their musicians to play during auditions. Opera Colorado will be holding auditions for chorus members on Sunday, December 11 from 12 pm to 3 pm at the Robert and Judi Newman Center for Theatre Education in the Historic Tramway Building. The Opera Colorado chorus is currently seeking tenors, baritones & basses for the 2012 Season productions of The Marriage of Figaro (Italian), Florencia en el Amazonas (Spanish), and Il Trovatore (Italian). In addition, we have limited audition slots available for sopranos and mezzo-sopranos. Singers who have auditioned for the chorus in the past two years do not need to re-audition at this time. Applicants who are being considered will be contacted and given an audition time. The Opera Colorado Chorus is a largely volunteer group. Participants are paid a stipend for each production to cover parking and transportation costs.
