Russian Pianist Kirill Gerstein to tour US

Following a jet-setting summer at the festivals of Verbier, Aix-en-Provence, Lucerne, and Saratoga, plus concerts with Gustavo Dudamel in Caracas, 29-year-old Russian pianist Kirill Gerstein will perform a host of high-profile U.S. dates and debuts this season, including:

  • Oct. 9-11: Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra debut; Hans Graf-cond. (Shostakovich: Piano Cto. No. 2)
  • Oct. 23-25: Detroit Symphony; Charles Greenwell-cond. (Rachmaninoff: Piano Cto. No. 3)
  • Jan. 6: Kennedy Center launch of a tour with cellist Steven Isserlis that includes San Francisco (Jan. 10)
  • Jan. 15-17: Houston Symphony; Hans Graf-cond. (Gershwin: Rhapsody; Ravel: Piano Cto. in G)
  • March 4-6: Chicago Symphony debut; Charles Dutoit-cond. (Rachmaninoff: Piano Cto. No. 2)
  • March 11-13: Atlanta Symphony debut; Vassily Sinaisky-cond. (Liszt: Piano Cto. No. 2)

In a play without music, the words ought to support the meaning behind a character's actions. When an artist sets paint to canvas, there are brush strokes used for different effects. Sometimes those strokes are subtle, imperceptible; they produce works of art like the Mona Lisa . Other times the very obvious nature of the stroke is the art, as in works by Van Gogh. With some composers of music, the notes on the page are their craft. How those notes translate into an aural experience is what defines some composers as great artists. Brian Ferneyhough has a masterful command of the techniques of putting notes on the page. These techniques are sometimes so subtle, even though written in black and white, they escape detection. Some of what he attempts with his music is just that, to escape detection, to bury the framework, diverting the ear away from the structure, so only the music is heard .
